Notes for the VR Professional (2015)
Pastoral is a pastoral-style video game, go figure. The game is an experimental attempt to invoke presence. The current version does not yet reach that goal.
To help induce presence, the game is designed to be played from within a small area, approximately 1 meter square, minimizing the the need for mouse driven (x,z) movement. All rotation is controlled by the HMD thus maintaining the synchronization of the ocular and vestibular systems in the brain. Targeting is driven by calculating the gaze/landscape intersection then performing an inverse projectile arc calculation.
We also experiment with low light design. This decision reduces the screen door effect and the uncanny valley, as well as the negative effects of anti-aliasing and strong contrasts.
